Sessions available for practice members of Bristol GP Education

We offer professional development and clinical sessions to practices and these are listed below.

Number of participants

There is no minimum number for the professional development sessions. For the clinical sessions, the minimum number is 6.
To enable the learning to be interactive, we recommend that no more than 15 people attend any event. For learning that incorporates 2 meetings, the same people should commit to attending both sessions.

Venue

In the past, most events that we have provided for practices have taken place at the practice. We are happy to come to you, or to an alternative venue of your choice. Please note that you would be responsible for booking and meeting the costs of any alternative venue.

Time of day

We are very flexible, and can provide sessions at any time of day, by mutual agreement.

A - Professional development

  • A practice education appraisal

Any/all staff

An examination of the learning culture and mechanisms within the practice, and how to maximise learning potential

  • An update on GP appraisal and revalidation

GPs

The up to date position regarding GP appraisal and revalidation. To include the currently required components of appraisal and how to prepare effectively for it

  • Training in carrying out useful and effective staff appraisals

Anyone carrying out, or interested in carrying out staff appraisals

Performance management or developmental or both? How and what to prepare; conducting the appraisal; follow up for the appraiser and the appraisee

  • Managing time more effectively

 

Any/all staff

Strategies, tips and techniques to help individuals and teams

  • Problem-solving: a whole-team approach

All staff. Needs at least one representative from each practice team

Ways of solving problems involving the whole practice team: facilitating motivation and lasting change

  • Dealing with difficult behaviours and resolving conflict

Any/all staff

To include difficult behaviours that may be encountered in both staff and patients. This session may also be used to resolve existing conflict and/or to obviate conflict in the future

  • Making the most of significant event meetings  and/or other practice –based learning

Any/all staff who might attend internal education meetings

How to prepare for, conduct and follow up these meetings to make the most of the learning. What is reflective learning? How to do it easily and usefully

  • Understanding barriers to communication, and communicating more effectively

Any/all staff

Can include both written and verbal communication: how to save time, motivate and involve staff at all levels

  • Effective working in teams

All staff. Benefits from representatives from all practice teams

To generate more effective interactions both within and between teams within the practice

  • Finding and benefitting from effective support

Any/all staff

Where to access support/how to generate effective support mechanisms. The benefits of relationships of support and how to get the most from them

  • Mentoring skills (3 x 2 hours or 2 x 3 hours)

Any/all staff

Designed to equip people with the skills needed for effective mentoring of others. No prior knowledge or experience is required to participate

 

*This gives an idea of what the session could be. We are happy to tailor any session to the specific needs of your practice.

 

Duration

We recommend that each learning event is 2-3 hours long. In some cases, it is useful to hold an initial meeting of 2 hours with a follow-up at least 3 weeks later. Again, we can be flexible to meet your needs.

B - Clinical Sessions

We have a collaborative arrangement with the Bristol Nuffield Hospital whereby they will offer to our practice members, free of charge, a “Lunch and Learn” session at your practice.
They offer a training session / workshop / Q&A or any format of your choice with a consultant on a clinical topic to be chosen by you. Sessions with the Nuffield support services (including physiotherapists, x-ray department, fitness and wellbeing centre) are also available. In both cases, a buffet lunch will be provided, again free of charge.
